National Institute of Tuberculosis, Lung Diseases and Thoracic Surgery

Pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis used to be treated here from the beginning. From 17th March to 15th July 1945, the institute served as the 1st Czechoslovak Evacuation Hospital. Dr. Karol Šiška contributed to the development of surgical departments considerably and made the first lung resection in Slovakia on 4th February 1948. The resection treatment in the pulmonary tuberculosis treatment culminated in 1958, when 268 surgeries were made. In 1971, bronchoplastic surgery started to bloom and mediastinoscopy and parasternal mediastinoscopy were added to the spectrum of diagnostic methods. In 1988, the Centre of Chest Surgery was established at the institute.

The institute offers diagnostics and differential diagnostics, conservative and surgical treatment of tuberculosis and respiratory diseases including lung tumours, gynaecological and urological diseases, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, outpatient care in the field of surgery, gynaecology, bronchology, urology and lung function tests.
