Hiking, snowshoeing and ski mountaineering are the most popular ways to explore the Tatras in winter. Recommended winter hiking destinations in the High Tatras include Hrebienok, Zamkovský’s chalet, Téry’s chalet, Bilík’s chalet, Popradské Pleso, Sliezsky Dom and the chalet at Zelené pleso (tarn), all accessible via designated routes. How to navigate winter trails? In treeless areas where trail markings on trees or rocks are usually used, winter routes are marked with poles instead.

Thanks to their diverse winter offer, the High Tatras are among Slovakia’s most popular winter resorts. The winter season typically begins in November and lasts until April, offering activities for everyone—from beginners to experienced winter sports enthusiasts.

Enjoy perfectly groomed ski pistes in Tatranská Lomnica and Štrbské Pleso, or use the extensive network of cross-country skiing trails in Štrbské Pleso, the largest cross-country skiing area in the High Tatras. Štrbské Pleso, the highest-located ski resort with the lower chairlift station at 1,351 m above sea level, offers Slovakia’s longest ski season with 9 km of pistes. Tatranská Lomnica boasts 12 km of pistes with varying difficulty levels. Here, you can experience sunny skiing adventures on Slovakia’s highest-located and steepest piste in Lomnické sedlo (saddle, 2,190 m), a hotspot for freeride enthusiasts. If you love adrenaline, try a dog sled ride, sledging on the 2.6 km lit track from Hrebienok to Starý Smokovec, or experience the magical atmosphere of night sledging under the stars, available several times a week.
